C!Stephen is feeling alone and unsafe, so his reaction is to put up every defense he can think of - physical, emotional, and, in the case of Sweetness, mechanical.

L!Stephen, meanwhile, is also feeling defensive....so he overcompensates by being hyper-accommodating. Alas.
